Connection Denied: Stepping Out of Emotional Isolation With Somatic Emotional Healing
The deepest wound may not be what happened but rather the connection you were denied.
For decades, I suffered a deep terror of having nothing and no one.
It wasn't irrational anxiety. It was an accurate memory.
The household I grew up in was harsh, demeaning, full of rage and undermining behavior.
Lacking affection.
I was a sensitive, insecure teenager who felt like the inferior person I’d been conditioned to be.
An overweight ugly duckling holed up in a basement bedroom—dissociated, out of my body.
I used food to comfort the ache of feeling unloved. Cookies, candy, ice cream and books were my companions. My peers were launching their lives - boyfriends, cute clothes, college plans. But I didn’t fit in, so I stayed on the periphery.
My mother, busy conducting a flagrant affair, wasn’t around.
Desperate, I remember sitting on the living room couch one evening, summoning the courage to pour my heart out to my dad about the eating disorder and the humiliation of being ridiculed at school.
Depression, loneliness and isolation.
He offered a few platitudes and that was it. The issue was never spoken of again.
I was utterly alone in darkness.
Somehow I managed to keep going.
Surviving.
But desolation became an emotional pattern that haunted me for decades.
Living Through the Lens of Past Pain
Even as an adult—after building a life where people genuinely loved, respected, and cared for me—old aloneness remained.
Intellectually, I understood that my life had changed but the terrified teenager inside remained engulfed in darkness.
I awoke panicked in the middle of the night. Convinced that I had nothing and no one.
My heart had contracted to protect itself from rejection, so I couldn't actually feel the connection that was right in front of me.
ARE OLD GHOSTS DRIVING YOU?
Do you constantly over-deliver?
People-please?
Battle perfectionism or emotional burnout?
When we grow up believing we’re "too much" or "not enough," not only do we feel sad, we contract.
Wall off our hearts to survive.
But the walls keep us uneasy.
Off balance.
Repel the love and safety we crave.
Honoring Emotions Creates a Shift
For me, addressing emotional contraction revealed a profound, healing truth.
It wasn’t a matter of searching for more people. Love and connection were there. I needed to open my heart to receive it.
I’d understood that intellectually.
Maybe you can relate to knowing something in your mind?
But knowledge alone doesn’t change things.
Breakthroughs come when we feel the truth viscerally.
Embody it.
Then, present moment truth replaces past terror.
You feel seen.
Safe.
Loved.
Joyful.
More Than Just Relief - Unshakeable Freedom
That’s what lies beyond the shadows.
An unarmored heart.
Instead of being physically drained by all the energy it takes to guard your heart.
Waking up in the morning minus the crushing weight of unworthiness or the frantic urge to prove yourself.
Walking into a room, being authentic, knowing that your presence is enough.
The "mental load" quiets: You don’t spend energy trying to manage everyone else's perception of you.
Boundaries become effortless: You stop over-giving because you don’t need to prove your worth.
Connection becomes real: You stop projecting past betrayal onto current relationships, allowing true intimacy to unfold.
You don't have to spend the rest of your life managing fallout from old stories.
You can step into the vibrant, open-hearted truth of who you’re here to be.
