"If you are intelligent, empathetic, and spiritual, this is not the period in history you want to exist in. You see what’s happening, you have limited power to stop it, and it breaks your heart."
A client posted those words on social media recently.
If you’re like most of my clients—highly capable, deeply empathetic, and used to solving big problems—that quote may hit you square in the chest.
Every day, the headlines deliver a relentless parade of chaos: war, climate anxiety, systemic injustice, and division.
A young father murdered by ICE in front of his 3 year old daughter.
You feel the weight of it. Sad, frustrated, heavy.
Your brain screams: "I need to DO something!"
But then overwhelm sets in. You feel like you aren’t doing enough. Or you get so saturated that you just want to check out entirely.
Here’s the truth: The answer isn't more outer focused doing.
When we try to "do" our way out of global overwhelm, we end up locked in a chronic fight-or-flight response. We override our bodies, run on adrenaline, and end up burned out.
To actually make a difference, we have to change our internal frequency. Move through the heaviness and reclaim quiet confidence. Here’s how.
Step 1: Locate the Sensation (Get Out of Your Head)
Your nervous system doesn’t process world events in thoughts; it processes them in physical sensations.
Take a breath. Where’s the tension? Are your shoulders up around your ears? Is your chest tight? Is your jaw clenched?
Before you try to fix the world, simply identify your body’s physical landscape.
Step 2: Name the Messenger
Once you connect with the physical tension, name the emotion behind it. Is it despondency? Rage? Profound heartbreak?
Here’s a perspective shift: Emotions are not "good" or "bad." They are simply messengers trying to get your attention because an adjustment is needed.
Instead of suppressing grief or pushing worry away, try a radical experiment: Accept it. Let yourself feel exactly what you are feeling right now, without telling yourself you "should" feel differently.
Step 3: Listen to the Wisdom
When you stop fighting an emotion, it can deliver its message. Ask it: What do you want me to know?
Often, your deepest heartbreak contains the blueprint for your highest contribution.
Heartbreak over the erosion of human rights might inspire you to teach your children about justice, mentor a young woman in your field, or donate to a legal aid clinic.
Anguish over environmental destruction might inspire you to plant a native pollinator garden in your backyard, fund a local land trust, or source your produce from a local regenerative farm.
When you sift through the layers of static, you inevitably arrive back at your wise, peaceful center.
Being Trumps Doing: How to Stop the Burnout Loop
We are conditioned to believe that "doing" is the only thing that counts. But action born from fear, anger, or exhaustion only adds more chaotic energy to the collective.
We see this play out on the global stage daily—politicians endlessly vowing to “fight” for their positions. But fighting only feeds the fight. It reacts from the same frequency as the opposition, perpetuating the exact cycle it claims it will solve.
When you prioritize inner peace and cellular safety, you step off that battlefield entirely. You connect to a higher frequency. This is where miracles—which are actually the natural order of the universe—take place.
In this aligned state, solutions we couldn't conceive of with our stressed, logical minds start to appear. Synchronicities spark. The universe meets you with exactly what you need - even if you didn’t even know you needed it.
Finding inner peace is not passive. It is the most potent "doing" you can engage in.
From alignment, you see beneath the facades of a wounded world and recognize that under the armor, everyone has a soft center.
Instead of reacting to chaos and feeding negativity, you bless the world with your grounded presence.
You cannot fix a broken world from a broken state of being. Restore inner peace first and the rest follows.
